I have been gardening while deer watch for a lot of years and there are plants the deer clearly love to eat and plants they prefer to avoid. 🍁The temperature is starting to dip and the daylight hours are getting shorter.🍂 It’s time to start your fall garden preparation! Follow our checklist to make sure you've got it all covered. ⠀ ⠀ 1. Write down your #springgarden plans as you prepare for winter.⠀ ⠀ 2. Make a plan to get some chunky #mulch to cover delicate plants for winter (roses).⠀ ⠀ 3. Divide your biggest overgrown #perennials.⠀ ⠀ 4. Don’t divide grasses until spring.⠀ ⠀ 5. Clean out your #wormbins and prep them for the winter.⠀ ⠀ 6. Plan to collect #leaves into garbage cans to keep and mold over winter.⠀ ⠀ 7. Plant as many #bulbs as you can afford and don’t forget the giant alliums!⠀ ⠀ 8. Divide and redistribute the longest #bloomingperennials to get more colour.⠀ ⠀ 9. Don’t forget to remove all hoses from the outside taps to prevent burst pipes due to freezing temperatures.⠀ ⠀ 10. When you water, water well! Once the heat of summer comes on, it’s the time that your prized plants need a little extra attention. Newly planted plants will not appreciate the hot summer sun and would prefer to be kept moist throughout the hot days. Hand water plants slowly directly into their roots and let soak then come back and water again to be sure the water is getting into the root system. ⠀ ⠀ New planting may need water daily in the summer months so keep an eye on the newbies. If you haven’t already done so you should cut them to the ground. Pull out your Crabgrass! Crabgrass is a weedy annual grass that sprouts in the spring and lays unseen until August where it suddenly appears in lawns everywhere. It lays out flat pressing down the surrounding turfgrass and sends out its reddish seed stalks looking crab-like in the lawn. ⠀ ⠀ As soon as you can learn what it looks like in your lawn you can set out a program of picking out the easily removed grasses a bit each day.
