Features in a landscape make it capturing and sleek.
A well-placed landscape feature can make the difference between a drab landscape and a landscape that really stands out. The focal feature in this landscape is clearly the captivating rock water feature that has been accented with smaller grassy plants.
When placing rocks into a landscape be sure that a few simple rules are followed; doing so will ensure you to have a more natural, flowing and visually-appealing landscape.
- Do not place rocks of similar size or shape too close together. Placing them too close together removes the natural look from the rocks and will cause feature to seem artificial.
- Be sure that rocks are buried to give the natural effect of having them appear to be emerging out of the earth.
- Select rocks that are appropriate for your project. Usually rocks that appear more weathered and rounded blend into the landscape better and appear less man-made.
A simple rock feature using flat-topped slabs and gravel to create a solid surface for a walk is also very attractive. A simple corner bed transforms a dull corner into a beautiful focal feature that provides a unique place to plant a variety of plants. An instant success!
Having lights in your landscape will highlight particular areas. Lighting in landscapes can be used for different things, such as highlighting certain plants or features, and also for safety to light up a dark walkway.
Landscaping with light is a popular way of enhancing landscape plantings, lawns and gardens. This is done through the use of low-voltage lighting systems. In addition to the extra dimension night lighting provides to the landscaping, lighting gives additional safety and security around the home.
Designing with light requires the same sort of planning that landscape design does. Identify the areas to be lit and select their most striking features. One or two focal points in each area is adequate. These focal points can be trees, pathways, flower beds or fences. Additional lighting effects should be placed to support the focal points. Every landscape also has areas that should remain unlit. Installation of the lighting areas is easier if there is a plan to follow. Having elements of the landscape on paper can allow for light manipulation well before any actual installation is begun.
Listed below are some guidelines to help create an attractive landscaping with light plan.
- Use various lighting techniques such as cross-lighting or spotlighting to add visual interest.
- Conceal the actual light source behind bushes, shrubs, trees or flowers.
- Don't over light an object. A subtle lighting effect is usually more desirable.
- Strive for a natural look. Night lighting should imitate moonlight without glare.
- Illuminate any potential obstacles such as steps, paths or changes in sidewalk levels.
- Keep in mind the servicing of the lights. Will they be easy to reach when the bulbs need replacing or cleaning?
- The most important element of landscape lighting is the lighting effect - not the lighting fixtures. During the day the fixtures should blend naturally into the landscape.
- Keep light colour in mind. Different light sources produce different light colours. Select one lamp as the primary light source and use the others for special effects.
Low voltage lighting systems operate off of a 120-volt electrical outlet and power pack. The power pack reduces the electrical current to 12 volts. This ensures there will be no electrical shock even if contact is made with bare wires. Power packs are available with wattage's ranging from 121-500 watts. They may feature photocells, remote controls and built in motion or heat sensors. To determine the correct size of power pack to purchase, add up the total wattage of each feature specified for the installation. This number is known as the total nominal wattage or TNW. Generally the TNW rating should not be more than double the total wattage of the lamps. For example, your job might use six features each with a twenty watt bulb. The TNW for these fixtures is 120 (6 x 20). If the fixtures' TNW is too high, divide the electrical load between more than one power pack or switch to a higher unit. In large installations, it is not uncommon to use several power packs. Follow the installation instructions provided by the manufacturer of your system for proper installation.
Once properly installed, low-voltage lighting system require little care. Removal of dirt, leaves and debris will be needed occasionally. Check fixtures regularly and make the adjustments that are required. The cables there the lights are attached should be checked at least once a year for damage. It is important to replace burnt out bulbs immediately as the voltage that the burnt out bulb no longer uses flows to the remaining bulbs and reduces their lives.
Gardeners can choose from several different fixtures. Tier or accent lights define paths, walkways or steps as well as provide warmth and illumination without an upward glare. Light is projected downward around the base of the fixture in a soft ring, Mushroom and walk lights highlight areas of low foliage borders, walkways, paths and ground covers. The lights' large shade conceals the light source. Floodlights allow areas to come alive at night. They are aimed up and down fences or walls to highlight texture differences or to shadow the movement of bushes and trees. Step and surface mount lights provide subtle accent lighting for increased safety along sidewalks, buildings, pools and paths. They direct light in a controlled pattern eliminating glare. Well lights conceal the light source at ground level. They direct the light upward to create special effects.
Landscaping with light is an easy do-it-yourself project provided some forethought is involved. Several manufacturers supply local garden centres, nurseries and hardware stores with a variety of lighting systems. Plan your needs on paper first, then select the proper light sources you'll need to light up your landscape.
- Outdoor lighting makes your home safer and more secure by providing necessary illumination for walkways, steps and entrances.
- The use of outdoor lighting, in conjunction with timers and photo cells, can add even more peace of mind by providing a lived-in look while you're away from home and ensuring the area around the house is well lit when you arrive home after dark.
- The most common type of outdoor fixture is a brass wall lantern although materials such as cast aluminum have gained popularity because they are rust resistant.
- Generally, a light mounted to one side of every exterior door is the minimum lighting for the exterior of a house. Try to include a lantern or other wall fixture on both sides of the door and a pendant or post light near driveways or walkways.
- The popularity of using outdoor lanterns is growing. You can use small lanterns to accent powder rooms, small foyers, sitting areas or stairways.
A rock wall that is properly installed should last between thirty to fifty years! If you notice any movement or there is evidence of movement in the first few years you may require immediate adjustments or possibly replacements. It is important to watch a wall for shifting or movement to insure it is not being effected by its environment and becoming structurally unsound. Important to note when building a wall along paved concrete areas (such as a driveway or a parking space) is that drainage is paramount. If you fail to have proper drainage installed under the wall then water that becomes trapped by the wall will lift and crack the surrounding pavement; causing damage that will be unsightly and require repairs.
A water feature is an ideal landscape addition because it provides you a relaxing piece of nature in your living space; adding tranquil sounds, peace of mind and a wildlife friendly location.
Here are a few helpful tips for maintaining your water feature;
- Keep compost and organic mulches away from the edges of the pond to prevent nutrients from washing into the water source. High nutrient levels in the water will cause an increased and sometimes excessive algae growth.
- Float a ball or a log in your pond to give the winter ice something to compress as it freezes. This will help to reduced expansion damage done to the water feature and its surroundings.
Below are some examples of a variety of water features.
- A few plants and gentle flowing water under the bridge makes this the perfect end to any stroll through the backyard. Providing a peaceful and decorative viewing piece, this water feature gives those who wish to change their landscape a wonderful option. Providing a good view from house windows or along the driveway, this water feature can be enjoyed by anyone.
- Sometimes smaller is better, as is the case with this small chain of pools. They provide pleasant scenery close to the house, are low maintenance and are never intrusive. This water feature reminds you to take joy in all the small
things. - The quiet trickling of a waterfall, and the slow flow of a stream down a flat stone bed makes this water feature a personal favourite to all who are captivated by its simple beauty.
- Sometimes the most natural of landscapes need the most natural looking water features to go with them. This elegantly calming pond and stream add to this natural landscape, letting you step into your own calming oasis and away from the bustling world.
